Camel rides in Essaouira: what you need to know before you book
Camel rides in Essaouira depart from Diabat village, ten minutes south of the medina. The route crosses the eucalyptus forest, climbs the dunes and follows the Atlantic beach depending on the tour you choose. The animals are dromedaries — single-humped, native to the Moroccan Atlantic coast, calm, well-trained and used to guests of all ages. No previous experience is needed: your guide explains how to sit and how to ask the animal to stand up, which always gets a smile. Children under 5 are welcome for free when sharing a dromedary with an adult; one adult cannot carry more than one child on the same animal for safety reasons.
The sunset ride is the most popular format: the Cap Sim dunes turn orange and pink, and the silhouette of the camel against the Atlantic horizon makes for one of the strongest photographs you can take home from Essaouira. Camel rides in Essaouira are available year-round, but sunset light is particularly stunning from April to October. Prices start at €30 for one hour and vary by duration.
